Hyperthyroidism (Overactive Thyroid)
Hyperthyroidism is an overactive thyroid gland that causes weight loss, anxiety, and rapid heartbeat. Treatment includes medications, radioactive iodine, or surgery.
Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland produces excessive thyroid hormones, speeding up the body’s metabolic processes. Symptoms include weight loss, rapid heartbeat, anxiety, heat intolerance, and tremors. The most common cause is Graves’ Disease, an autoimmune disorder. Other causes include thyroid nodules and excessive iodine intake.
Diagnosis:
- Blood tests to measure TSH, T3, and T4 levels.
- Thyroid scan and uptake test to identify the cause.
Treatment:
- Anti-thyroid medications, radioactive iodine therapy, or thyroidectomy (surgical removal).
